* Court issues injunction preventing implementation of the gazette notification on Local Government elections
Wed, Nov 22, 2017, 01:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 22, Colombo: The Court of Appeal today issued a temporary injunction preventing the implementation of the gazette notification issued by the subject minister on delimitation of local authorities in relation to the Local Government elections.

A three-member judge bench comprising Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya, Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe and Justice Shiran Gunaratne made the decision considering a petition filed six voters.

The petition alleged that the gazette was issued by the subject minister in violation of the recommendations made by the National Delimitation Committee implementation of the gazette notification would cause a grave injustice to the petitioners.

The Court issuing the temporary injunction noted that the court needs time to conduct an examination into the issue and to determine whether the subject minister has the power to amend the Delimitation Committee's recommendations.

Accordingly, the court ordered the respondents to submit any objections within a week.

The court postponed the hearing of the petition until 4th December.
