* Information technology becomes a compulsory subject for Sri Lankan students

Nov 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that steps will be taken to make the information technology a compulsory subject in the school syllabus.

Participating at a function held at the Kuliyapitiya Central College recently, the Minister said in future, the entire education process will be based on information technology.

He noted that by now the IT knowledge has spread to the rural level and the government has taken measures to provide information technology education to all schools with the aim to further expand this knowledge.

The Minister said because of the great need of IT knowledge in the future the government has taken measures to provide IT training to teachers as well.

The Minister participated in the official launch of "IT Yahamaga" national campaign jointly by the Sarvodaya Fusion Institute and the Ministry of Education at Kuliyapitiya Central College on Sunday (Nov 12).

The IT Yahamaga project aims to educate communities of all ages how they can use information technology to make a positive impact on the societies they are living.
