* Gazette notification on the number of members of local government bodies issued

Nov 11, Colombo: The gazette notification on the number of members of local government bodies has been issued.

The Extraordinary gazette notification has been published under numbers 2043/56 (Sinhala) and 57.

The gazette notification for the Local Government election under the new electoral system was signed by the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha on the 01st of this month.

In addition to the number of councilors in local government bodies, the gazette notification also specifies establishment of Norwood, Maskeliya, Agarapathana, Ambagamuwa and Kotagala Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Under the amendment to the Local Authorities Elections Act, the number of local government bodies will increase from 336 to 341 while the number of councilors will increase from 4,486 to 8,356.

The Commissioner of Elections will announce the date of the election in near future. Government sources say that the elections will be held before the end of January next year.
