Nov 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police had exchanged fire with occupants of a lorry which was driven disregarding orders to stop, killing one person in the vehicle in the wee hours of Saturday in Koggalle, Ambalantota.
The victim was a 20 year old resident of the Koggalle, Waragoda area in Ambalantota.
The driver of the lorry and another person who were shot at the scene had fled leaving the dead person on the road, the police said.
However, the two men had then surrendered to the Ambalantota Police through lawyers.
On the orders of the IGP, a special police operation was conducted island wide from Friday 11 pm to Saturday 03 am and 52 police officers of the Ambalantota Police have participated in the operation.
According to the police, a group of policemen involved in the operation in Ambalantota, Koggala had attempted to stop a man riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
The motorbike had disregarded police orders to stop and the small lorry, which followed the bike had also continued driving while shooting at the police. The police have returned fire killing a passenger in the lorry.
Investigations have revealed that the lorry was transporting a stock of stolen banana stalks.
After the youth got shot, the other two occupants of the lorry had disposed his body and the stock of bananas on the road and fled away.
