* Special island wide police operation nabs over 800 wanted criminals and fugitives

Nov 11, Colombo: A special four-hour operation launched last night covering all police divisions across the island has nabbed over 800 wanted criminals and suspects with arrest warrants.

The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between 11:00 p.m. Friday and 3:00 a.m. Saturday by all police stations in the country with the participation of 16,362 police officers.

As a result of the operation, 758 people with arrest warrants and 86 suspects wanted for crimes have been arrested. Another 962 persons have been arrested on suspicion.

The operation carried out 948 drugs and illicit liquor raids. Three illegal firearms have also been seized.

The police also cited 5,744 traffic violations during the island wide operation.
