* Medical students to return to academic activities after striking for 10 months over SAITM

Nov 09, Colombo: Medical Faculty Students' Action Committee (CMC) sources said the medical students who have been boycotting classes to protest the SAITM issue for ten months have decided to go back to the lectures from next Monday.

The medical students have decided to resume studies after the government assured that the medical faculty of SAITM (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine) will be abolished.

Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday clarifying the President's solution to the controversial issue said the SAITM will be abolished and all assets and liabilities as well as students will be taken over by a new non-state and not-for-profit entity upon agreement of current shareholders, financial institutions that have lent money and the new entity.

The Medical Faculty of Kelaniya University at Ragama started the strike in January this year.

A spokesman of the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) said a special rally will be held tomorrow in Colombo Fort and dismantle the stage the students used for the fast.

However, the student unions' decision to return to academic activities has created controversy among some of the anti-SAITM protesters, a local newspaper said.

The IUSF says the government has agreed to abolish the SAITM, which has been the demand of the students, and provide a fair solution to the current SAITM students.

However, a decision has not been made yet whether the justice will be done for SAITM students by admitting them to state universities.

A frontline member of the anti-SAITM campaign said it was wrong to decide to resume activities without reaching a final decision.
