* Government reduces taxes on several essential food items ahead of budget

Nov 08, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government today announced reductions in the levies on several essential food items that will go into effect from midnight today ahead of the 2018 budget presentation tomorrow.

To control the Cost of Living of the consumers, Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera has reduced the levy on several essential food items from midnight, today (8th Nov.).

Announcing this pre-budget benefit in a media briefing at the Ministry with the State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne, the Minister said that majority of the consumers will benefit from this action, due to reduction of prices.

According to the announcement, the levy of following food commodities will be reduced in following manner.
