* Minister denies claim that SLMC agrees to confer medical degrees to SAITM students after 5 weeks of training
Sun, Dec 31, 2017, 07:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: The Ministry of Higher Education and Highways said that Minister Lakshman Kiriella has not made an announcement saying that Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) agreed to confer medical degrees to medical students of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) with five weeks of clinical training.

Issuing a statement the Ministry said that an SMS service of a private television channel has published a false news in this regard.

Private media reports said Minister Kiriella has announced that the SLMC agreed to recognize SAITM medical faculty students with five weeks of clinical training.

Reportedly the Minister made this statement addressing the 14th diploma-awarding ceremony of the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education held in Colombo on Saturday (Dec 30).

It has been reported that the Sri Lanka Medical Council however rejected the statement made by the Minister saying that an official consensus on this matter has not been reached yet although discussions were held on the required period of training for SAITM students to receive medical degrees.
