* Sri Lankan President urges voters not to vote for drug-addicted candidates

Dec 30, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today urged the public not to vote for any candidate addicted to drugs at the upcoming elections.

The President says that a massive women's force will be set up to eradicate the drug menace at the village level.

He made these remarks at a public meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in Palugasmadama today held to seek support for the candidates contesting the elections for the Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha in the Polonnaruwa district.

Speaking at the meeting, President Sirisena said he as the President, as well as the leader of the SLFP will appoint his representatives for each village to develop it.

He said the drugs are causing immense harm to school children and affirmed his commitment to seek the cooperation of others to liberate the country form this menace. The President said an extensive task force will be set up to control drugs.

The President also said he will carry forward the activities of new local governments in a manner never undertaken by previous government.

He said that when the election results are released on the 10th February, the elected representatives should have in their hands the action program to be implemented for the development of the respective division.

The President said he will unite every representative in the local institutions to develop the country.
