* Sri Lanka releases 69 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested for poaching in island waters

Dec 28, Colombo: The Sri Lankan courts in Jaffna and Vavuniya today have ordered the release of 69 Tamil Nadu fishermen who were arrested and detained for illegally entering the territorial waters for poaching.

An Indian fisheries official has said that the fishermen, arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy on various occasions for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), would be brought back to Rameswaram after completing necessary formalities, according to a PTI report.

The Sri Lanka Navy on Wednesday handed over of 20 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested for engaging in illegal fishing activities in Sri Lankan territorial waters, to the Indian Coast Guard after they were released from the Sri Lankan custody.

A total of 89 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been released by Sri Lankan authorities so far this year and 71 were still in various jail in Sri Lanka, the Indian fisheries official said.
