Tue, Dec 26, 2017, 08:49 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 26, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government said on Tuesday that it has allocated Rs. 50 million in 2018 to strengthen the tourist police force in order to enhance the safety of tourists visiting the island.

As part of the measure to increase the efficiency of the tourist police division, motorcycles, trailer bikes and all-terrain vehicles were given to the Tourist Police at a ceremony held in the Independence Square in Colombo today.

At the ceremony held under the patronage of the Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake, Minister of Tourism John Amaratunga and Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera, 18 new trailer bikes, two 125-Cc bikes and four Beach Rovers were handed over to the Tourist Police.

Tourism Minister Amaratunga has reportedly expressed concern about the increasing number of complaints of exploitation and harassment of foreign tourists and pledged to take stern action against those involved. He said that with tourist arrivals hitting record figures in recent years, the number of complaints was also increasing.

The Sri Lankan government has said that it will take immediate measures to provide a safe environment for tourists.

"We are very much aware of the ground situation and plan to take stern measures so that the good name of the industry and the country is not spoiled by a few miscreants," the Minister was quoted as saying.
