* Accepting nominations for remaining 248 local government bodies begin today
Mon, Dec 18, 2017, 09:46 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 18, Colombo: The second round of placing deposits and accepting nominations for the remaining 248 local government institutions will begin this morning and will end on Thursday 21st at 12 noon.

Placing deposits for the 248 institutions will end at 12 noon on Wednesday, 20th.

The 2nd set of local government bodies include 17 Municipal councils, 23 Urban councils and 208 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

Accepting nominations in the first stage for 93 Local Government Polls took place form December 11 - 14.

According to the Election Commission, 30 political parties and 49 independent groups have handed over nominations lists to contest 93 local government bodies at the first stage.

Additional Election Commissioner M M Mohammad says about 70 registered political parties will contest the polls and 15.6 million voters have been qualified for voting.

The Election Commission says that failure to submit the full list of candidates, not filling the women's quota in nomination lists, and missing signature of the party leader or the independent group leader are reasons for the rejection of nominations.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the polling date tomorrow or on the 21st of this month.

During the process of handing over the nominations, it is prohibited to hold rallies or meetings that would interfere with the ongoing GCE Ordinary Level examination at schools.

Meanwhile, a special unit has been set up at the Election Commission in Rajagiriya to accept complaints regarding violations of election rules. Units will be set up at district secretariat levels as well in the near future.
