* Demarcation of provincial councils expected to end by end of January, AG tells court
Mon, Dec 11, 2017, 11:58 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 11, Colombo: The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today that the demarcation of provincial councils is expected to be completed before the end of January and provincial council elections could be hold after it was passed as a bill in parliament.

This was stated by the Additional Solicitor General, Indika Devamuni De Silva, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General, when the petitions filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recently passed Provincial Council Elections Act.

The Additional Solicitor General said the demarcation of provincial councils is expected to finish before the end of January.

She further stated that once the bill was passed in parliament, it is possible to hold provincial council election soon.

As a result, the allegation that the government is preparing to postpone provincial elections is baseless, she said.

She also stated that passing the Provincial Councils' Elections Bill in Parliament was an internal matter of the Parliament and the Judiciary could not intervene in the parliamentary affairs.

Considering the points presented, the Supreme Court adjourned the petition till the 14th December.

Several parties including the chairman of the Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Prof. GL Peiris filed the petition requesting the court to declare the passage of the Provincials Councils Act unconstitutional.

The Bench comprised Chief Justice, Priyasath Dep, Justices Sisira de Abrew and Nalin Perera.
