* Sri Lanka Police recover 1200 star tortoises and banned glyphosate smuggled from India

Dec 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police yesterday discovered a hidden stock of 1,200 star tortoises and packages of banned agrochemical glyphosate near the Thillyadi Beach in Kalpitiya police division.

The police recovered the contraband during a search operation conducted by the police intelligence unit on an information received by the Kalpitiya Police.

The police said that 1,200 tortoises of different sizes were packed in plastic racks in in five large traveling bags.

The police also recovered 5,400 packets of 100 gram each of the banned weedicide glyphosate.

The police say the contraband is smuggled on boats from India through the sea and hidden in the beach to recover later.

No suspects have yet been arrested and the Kalpitiya Police are conducting investigations to find the suspects.
