Dec 07, Colombo: The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation says the Secretary to the Ministry and the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways will hold a special discussion with the railway trade unions to resolve the railway strike.

The discussion will be held at 12 noon today at the auditorium of the Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry at DR Wijewardene Mawatha,

The Ministry has informed all the trade unions participating in the strike to attend the discussion that will be held by the Secretary to the Ministry G.s. Withanage and General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways Mahanama Abeywickrama under the directions of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

The Railway Engineers Association started a strike from midnight Wednesday based on a complaint about the recruitment of assistant train drives outside the regular procedure.

Meanwhile, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva made a request to trade union leaders not to strike considering the inconvenience to the students who have already commenced the GCE (O / L) examination.

The Minister requested the union leaders to resolve the issue through discussions.

The Railway Control Room meanwhile, said all railway services to Colombo from outskirts are currently functioning normally.

However, local media reported that many commuters have been inconvenienced severely due to the strike this morning.

Many of the trains that were scheduled to arrive in Colombo were not driven today according to the reports and the long distance train services have been canceled.
