Dec 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Law and Order and Southern Development Minister praised the tri-forces and police for their commitment to neutralize the tensions and swiftly bring the Gintota situation under control.

The Law and Order Minister said in parliament today that the restive situation in Gintota was controlled as a result of the responsible actions taken by the police and armed forces.

Responding to a question raised by MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake last week, the Minister said statements have been obtained from 134 people who were injured and whose properties were damaged and a report on property damage has been prepared.

At no point the Police and Special Task Force personnel have been removed from the area and a police post has been established in the same place where the clashes were erupted to prevent this from happening in the future.

Steps have been taken to set up a committee consisting of religious leaders and intellectuals for peace building among the two communities.

The Minister assured that the security is still being maintained.

Tensions prevailed in the southern coastal town after ethnic clashes erupted between the Buddhist and Muslim communities last month prompting the police to impose a curfew in some parts of the Galle District.

The police arrested 22 persons following the clashes and they have been remanded till 14 December. According to the Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, 18 shops, 85 houses and property and 16 vehicles had been damaged during the clashes.
