* Government allocates Rs. 170 million for relief to weather affected

Dec 04, Colombo: The government has granted over 170 million rupees for the provision of relief to the people affected by the adverse weather conditions, Director of the national Disaster Relief center Chaminda Pathiraja said.

According to the Disaster Management center 123,217 people of 35,354 in 16 districts have been affected by the adverse weather conditions while 5,650 individuals of 1,424 displaced families have been provided shelter at 65 welfare centers.

The death toll has risen to 14 and two people are still missing and 77 people have been injured.

According to DMC figures as of 12 noon Monday, 823 houses have been destroyed and 32,347 houses have been partly damaged.

The government has granted provision on the basis of one million rupees to each divisional secretaries in the affected areas for the provision of relief.

A sum of 10,000 rupees will be issued through the insurance trust fund to each family affected by the adverse weather conditions as an initial allowance.

The officials have been directed to start payment of compensation from Monday based on the data collected by the respective Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Arrangements have also been made to meet any disaster situation if occurs in the North and the East provinces. All the government officials have been kept informed.
