Dec 02, Colombo: Following the tropical storm wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka's South and central hills, the Navy has been deployed for the rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas.
Sri Lanka Navy is currently engaged in flood relief operations in affected areas in the Southern, Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces of the island.
Promptly responding to the contingency situation, the Navy has deployed 13 relief teams along with 12 dinghies in areas which are prone to flash floods.
The Navy had deployed 6 relief teams in the Southern Province, 6 teams in the Western Province and another team in the Sabaragamuwa Province to swiftly evacuate affected communities from the affected regions and undertake prompt relief measures for them.
The naval troops are currently engaged in relief work in Thawalama, Pitabaddara, Dammulla and Imaduwa in Galle District, Sapugoda and Pandugama in Matara District, Bulathsinhala, Walallawita, Baduraliya and Mathugama in Kalutara District and Kuruwita in Ratnapura District.
The Navy relief teams have so far transferred 155 persons who were stranded without a mode of transport, as the roads had been inundated following heavy downpour.
Meanwhile, the naval relief teams continue to engage in rescue and relief work amidst extreme weather that caused havoc in several provinces in the country.
