Aug 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main ruling party United National Party on Tuesday said the party leadership has urged the President Maithripala Sirisena to remove Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Wijedasa Rajapakshe from all his ministerial portfolios.

Issuing a statement, General Secretary of the UNP Minister Kabir Hashim said the working committee of the UNP decided that Rajapakshe should be removed since he failed to act according to the decision taken by the committee and continues to violate collective responsibility of the party and the cabinet.

Chairman of the UNP, Malik Samarawickrema said Minister Rajapakshe who first agreed with the party's notice to rectify his remarks, has continued to criticize the government ministers and government policies.

UNP working committee last week decided to allow Rajapakshe till 21 August to correct, false statements made by him.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe recommended the appointment of Rajapakshe as the Minister of Justice in accordance with the agreement reached regarding the cabinet ministries of the government.

Accordingly, it is expected that the President will remove Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe from the cabinet post in accordance with the UNP notice.

If that happens, he will be the first parliamentarian sacked from the ministerial portfolio of the Unity Government.

Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe also serves as the Prime Minister's representative of the Constitutional Council which decides on the highest posts in the country.
