* One-day island wide raid arrests 777 Army deserters

Aug 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) and Sri Lanka Police in a combined raid conducted island-wide throughout Friday (18, Aug) arrested 777 Army personnel who are Absent Without Leave (AWOL) or having deserted their posts in respective formations around the country.

The raid, the biggest ever conducted within a single day took 1 Officer and 776 Other Rankers in to custody, the Army Media Unit said.

Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police together with the Police conduct island-wide operations to apprehend deserters and disciplinary action will be taken against them thereafter.

Sri Lanka military last month said over 4,400 deserters have been arrested since the beginning of this year after an amnesty granted last year ended on 31 December.
