Aug 10, Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that a new tradition has been created today with the resignation of the former Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
"An example was set at this moment that the government is not interfering into investigations," the Premier said.
"In the past not a single minister had appeared before a commission, no one had resigned of allegations," he pointed out. "Unlike the previous government, we act transparently against baseless allegations against us."
The Premier said his party, United National Party (UNP) will remove anyone who is alleged of wrongdoing.
MP Ravi Karunanayake has not sought an interim injunction from Supreme Court against arrest like some in the previous regime, the Premier pointed out. He said the former Minister appeared before the commission on his own and gave his evidence and thereafter he tendered his resignation and sat in a back bench.
"That was the difference between the good governance of this government and previous regime," the Premier said.
The Premier lashed at the media for labelling everyone a rogue. He said everyone should discipline themselves in accordance with the new tradition and culture.
"I am proud of creating such a situation in the country," the Premier said.
