Thu, Aug 10, 2017, 07:24 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader R Sampanthan today commended Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake's decision to step down from his post as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking in Parliament today the Opposition Leader said MP Karunanayake has not yet been found guilty by any confident court and he is entitled to presumption of innocence as it is his fundamental right.

"I commend that bold step. He has done so in the interest of good governance, in the interest of people of this country and the interest of the country itself. He had a set an example which many others could do well to follow," the Opposition Leader said.

He added that in the past few years there have been several charges of corruption against many but none of those have been dealt with and it is significant that a minister in the present government tendered his resignation today on the basis of certain charges against him which have not yet been proven.
