* Sri Lankan government imposes a new tax on non-potable spirits

Aug 09, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has imposed a special license fee and a new tax on non-potable spirits, the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media says.

According to the Ministry, annual license fee of Rs. 50,000 and Excise duty of Rs 25. per Liter will be imposed on Non potable Spirit (Methanol) with immediate effect.

It has been reported that the new charges have been imposed to prevent the abuse of tax exemptions given to the imports of non-potable alcohols and importing spirits to produce illicit alcoholic beverages.
