Aug 09, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today granted bail to the convener of the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasekara, who was arrested for damaging public property.
The Colombo High Court released the student leader on a cash bail of Rs. 10,000 and three surety bails of Rs. 500,000 each when the case was taken up for hearing today.
Colombo High Court Judge Manilal Waidyathilaka strongly warned the IUSF convener and said that if he violates bail conditions, the bail would be canceled immediately and he will be remanded.
He was also ordered to report to the Maradana Police on the last Sunday of each month.
Convener of Inter University Bhikku Federation Tampitiye Sugathananda Thero, Lahiru Weerasekara and three other students were arrested in connection with the damage to the Health Ministry during a protest against the SAITM (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine).
Protesting university students and student monks led by the two unions forcibly entered the Health Ministry building on 21 June and caused damages to the public property amounting to Rs. 870,000.
