* Army brigadier arrested over Rathupaswala shooting further remanded

Aug 09, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today further remanded the four suspects who were arrested for shooting the villagers demanding safe drinking water in Rathupaswala.

Gampaha Chief Magistrate, DA Ruwan Pathirana today extended the remand of the four suspects including Brigadier Anura Deshapriya Gunawardena, who was the commanding officer of the army contingent that fired on the protesters during the Rathupaswala incident in 2013 resulting in the deaths of three people.

Apart from Brigadier Deshapriya, three army personnel - Army Staff Sergeant Dingiri Arunge Sirisena, Sergeant Lalith Gray and Corporal Jayasundara Mudiyanselage Thilakaratne were also remanded until 23 August.

The Army shooting at the protesters on August 01, 2013 killed two students, Akila Dinesh and Ramila Ravishan, and another youth Nilantha Pushpakumara. Another 26 including several journalists were injured in the shooting.

The shooting incident gained wide publicity internationally as well as locally.
