* Sri Lanka police arrest six members, including leader of criminal Ava gang

Aug 07, Colombo: The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) of Sri Lanka Police have arrested six members, including the leader of the 'Aava' gang who are allegedly responsible for the sword attack on two policemen in Kopai, Jaffna.

The police have arrested three suspects from Colombo Fort and two others suspects from Jaffna earlier today and another suspect in Mattakkuliya last night. All suspects are residents of Jaffna.

Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said Sathayavel Nathan Nishantha alias Nisha Victor, Raj Kumar Jey Kumar alias Vinod and Kulendran Manojith alias Manoj were arrested from Fort. Sathayavel Nathan Nishantha is allegedly the gang leader.

Another member Shiva Subramaniyum Paul was arrested from Mattakkuliya last night while two others Sri Kanthan Kugadhasa and Arjunam Prasanna were arrested from Jaffna.

SP Gunasekara said the police had also recovered two swords in the suspects' possession.

Two policemen inquiring a complaint came under attack by 12 members of the gang, who arrived at the scene of the incident on four motorcycles and assaulted the policemen with swords and clubs in Kopai on 30 July.

The police earlier arrested five suspects from Jaffna over the attack.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara earlier said the police have identified the members of the Ava gang as responsible for the attack and the leader of the Ava gag is a former LTTE cadre.

The Police Spokesperson said the suspects are currently under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the TID is conducting further investigations under the direction of the IGP Pujith Jayasundara.
