* Sri Lanka Air Force Airman fell off from helicopter during flood rescue operations dies

May 27, Colombo: A Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Airman who had fallen from a helicopter while engaging in a flood rescue operation in Neluwa area in Galle has died.

The 37-year-old SLAF airman, YMS Yaparathna had fallen off the helicopter while carrying a flood victim on a cable yesterday morning. The helicopter was flying about 25 feet above the ground at the time of his fall, police said.

He has succumbed to his injuries last night while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle, Army spokesman Brigadier Roshan Senevirathne said.

Sri Lanka Air Force has deployed helicopters to rescue the people stranded by the floods and to distribute relief. According to the Air Force spokesman Group captain Gihan Seneviratne operations are being carried out continuously.
