* Update: Building collapses in Sri Lanka capital killing one and injuring scores

May 18, Colombo: One person died and at least 21 others were injured when a seven-story building under construction in a suburb of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo collapsed Thursday, the police said.

Police spokesman Priyantha Jayakody said the injured in the mishap have been rushed to nearby hospitals while rescue efforts are underway at the site in Wellawatte.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director of Colombo National Hospital one of the injured admitted to the hospital succumbed to his injuries.

Sri Lanka Army has deployed its troops to assist the rescue operations searching for people who might be trapped inside the building.

Rescue operations searching for people trapped under the debris are severely hampered by the rain, authorities said.
