Thu, May 18, 2017, 07:40 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army has deployed its troops to assist the rescue operations in Wellawatte where a five-story building that was under construction collapsed injuring 21 people.

Troops of the 14 Division under command to the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) rushed to Wellawatte and are currently engaged in rescue and evacuation operations, the Army said.

Rescue operations searching for people trapped under the debris are severely hampered by the rain.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva has instructed the SFHQ-West to take necessary steps and attend to the immediate needs and other rescue operations as necessary.
