* President calls for a broad program to apprise public on sorting waste

June 15, Colombo: President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to the relevant officials to implement a broad program enlighten the public on sorting household waste.

Participating in a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat Tuesday on streamlining the waste management, the President inquired about the progress of the programs that are being implemented island wide to manage the solid waste.

The President instructed the Inspector General of Police to take stern legal actions against people who obstruct the garbage disposal at sites selected by Local Government authorities and further instructed to strengthen the Environmental Police.

President Sirisena said the Government will provide Rs. 2 billion this year to build a waste disposal system at Aruwakkalu in Puttalam.

The President instructed the Environmental Police to submit a daily report on improper garbage disposal on roadsides.

Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Vajira Abeywardena, Secretary to the Minister of Defense Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Provincial Council and Local Government Kamal Padmasiri, Western Province Chief Secretary Daya Senarath, Tri Forces' Commanders and the Inspector General of Police participated in the meeting.
