* Court warns to issue arrest warrant for Bodu Bala Sena leader for failing to appear
Mon, Jun 12, 2017, 05:10 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 12, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today warned to issue an arrest warrant if the leader of the extremist Buddhist organization, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) fail to appear before the court on the next court date.

Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera was absent in Court today when a case against him was taken up for hearing, claiming that he has received death threats.

The controversial Thera was absent for the court hearing today on the allegation of offensive behavior inside the Homagama Magistrate's Court amounting to Contempt of Court on January 25, last year.

The counsel appearing for the defendant said the Thera was not appearing in the court since he has allegedly received death threats.

The Court of Appeal observed that Court will have to issue warrant against the accused if he failed to appear in Court on next inquiry date.

On a previous hearing the Thera evaded the court producing a medical certificate that he is not in good health.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysuriya appearing for the Attorney General moved Court to issue a warrant for the arrest of accused for evading the Court on several occasions citing various reasons.

However, the Court of Appeal observed that the court would not issue a warrant against the Thera this time but ordered the accused to be present in Court on July 18, 19 and 20.

The Thera is said to be hiding in a safe location.
