July 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's new Defense Secretary Kapila Waidyaratne today assured that he will always protect national security and will not allow national security to be endangered.
Speaking to media after meeting with the Chief Prelates of Asgiriya, Malwathu and Ramanna chapters, the former Senior Additional Solicitor General said as a law enforcement official he will assure that there will be no unnecessary arrests of security forces personnel.
The Defense Secretary said he is determined to protect the dignity and honor of the country's tri-forces and Civil Defense members and never will allow to dilute the respect owed to them.
When asked about the arrests of security personnel following investigations into the alleged war crimes, the top defense official said unwarranted arrests are not made under any circumstance.
He asserted that only necessary investigations are being conducted into corruption and crime and unnecessary arrests will not be made. In future an arrest will not be made without charges being filed by the Attorney General or the involvement of high ranking officials.
Responding to questions, the Defense Secretary asserted that the proposed Bill on Prevention of Disappearances will not endanger the war heroes and assured that the war heroes can live without any fear or suspicion.
