* Senior DIG arrested for helping suspect in Jaffna school girl's killing to escape

July 15, Colombo: The Criminal Investigations Department of Sri Lanka Police arrested a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for helping a suspect in the killing of a school girl in Jaffna to flee.

Following extensive investigations the CID arrested Jaffna Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe for assisting one of the suspects, who was arrested over the gang rape and murder of school girl, to escape police custody.

The SDIG will be produced before the Kytes Magistrate's Court for further action.

The 18-year-old school girl, Sivaloganathan Vidya was kidnapped, gang raped and murdered on Pungudutivu island of Jaffna in Northern Province in May 2015.

The gang rape and the killing shook the island nation sparking violent protests in Jaffna seeking justice for the young victim.

The police have arrested nine suspects in connection with the heinous crime and they remain in remand custody.

The nine suspects have been charged with 41 counts when the case were taken up for hearing before a trial-at-bar at the Jaffna High Court for the first time last month. All suspects have pleaded not-guilty to the charges.

The CID is continuing investigations into the incident.
