* Slight decrease in dengue cases observed in Sri Lanka this month as the outbreak kills 269
Sat, Jul 15, 2017, 07:53 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 15, Colombo: Dr. Hasitha Tissera, Director, National Dengue Control Unit, says a slight decrease in the number of reported dengue cases has been observed so far in this month in comparison to last month.

Since the 1st January of this year, 90,865 suspected dengue cases have been reported from all over the island to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry and 269 people have died of the mosquito-borne disease.

Dr. Tissera noted that the number of dengue patients recorded were high, but the deaths recorded were less when compared to the number of patients. He said that 30 percent of the dengue victims were schoolchildren and 50 percent were between 15 and 46 years of age.

Over 42 percent dengue cases were reported from the Western Province. According to the official 136 deaths and 37,981 dengue patients were from the Western Province.

Dr. Tissera said the Aedes Aegypti mosquito carrying the dengue virus type 2 has become resistant to the fogging, BTI and other dengue control methods and that's the reason for the dengue epidemic this year.

He said the scattered showers in places across the island is a reason for the increase number of dengue cases and stressed the need to eliminate the dengue larvae breeding places frequently.

The second phase of the national mosquito eradication program under the theme "Let's start ourselves - Join to eradicate dengue" commenced from the Western Province today.
