Jan 16, Colombo: American beverages giant Coca-Cola is interested in using Sri Lanka as a production hub and set up a plant, to cater to the Indian market, the Finance Ministry said today.

Coca Cola has expressed its interest when the President and the Executive Vice President of Coca Cola Company Asia Pacific Group met Sri Lanka's Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake in Colombo at the weekend.

Coca-Cola Co may set up a plant in Sri Lanka to feed demands in India, which has the highest demand of the firm's products in South Asia, the Ministry said.

"They pointed out that Sri Lanka could be developed into a production hub to re-export their products to India. India has the highest demand for Coca Cola products in the South Asian region."

The Atlanta-based company produces Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Power Ade, juice-based drinks like Minute Maid and Maaza, packaged water, as well as Vitamin Water and Smart Water.

The non-alcoholic beverages market in India is said to be around $5 billion, according to the Indian Beverage Association.
