Thu, Jan 12, 2017, 12:27 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 12, Colombo: Three kidney patients undergoing treatment at the Kandy General Hospital's kidney patients' ward have died of H1N1 infection, hospital authorities said.

The deaths within a span of two days have forced the authorities to close the ward where the three patients were being treated. One of the patients died on January 9 and the other two died on January 10.

Confirming the deaths were due to H1N1 infection, Kandy General Hospital Director Dr. Saman Ratnayake said that adequate measures had been taken to prevent the spread of the influenza to the other wards.

He said the hospital staff and the other patients were tested for the presence of the virus. Medical specialists visited the Hospital yesterday (11) and educated the staff of the hospital on preventive measures, the Director said.

Meanwhile, a separate unit has been opened at the Kandy General Hospital to examine and treat patients with influenza symptoms. Dr. Ratnayake requested that anyone with fever and the symptoms of Influenza seek treatment at the nearest hospital.
