Jan 09, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today sentenced police officers to death for killing youth, who was in police custody three years ago.
Badulla High Court Judge Rohan Jayawardane today sentenced five police officers of Kandeketiya Police including a sub inspector and an officer attached to the Civil Defense Force for killing a youth.
Those convicted Kandaketiya Police SI G. Somaratne, Constables P.D. Pathmakumara Gamage, R. Pushpakumara, M. G. Abeyratne, police assistant D.M. Wijeratne and Civil Defense officer S.M. Jayasundara were found guilty of murdering the youth arrested for treasure hunting and assaulting four others at Meegahakiula in Angurukaduwa in 2014.
Meanwhile, Matara High Court today sentenced four suspects to death under the charges of unlawful assembly and killing a person in the year 2005.
Matara High Court Judge Damith Thotawatte sentenced the four persons to death after they were found guilty of hacking a person to death in Gandara, Matara.
Although Sri Lankan courts give death penalty in serious crimes such as murder, rape and drug trafficking, no executions have been carried out since 1976 and most of the death penalties are commuted to life sentences.
