Feb 01, Colombo: The year 2016 has recorded the highest foreign remittances amounting to USD 7,241.5 million equivalent to Rs.1054.5 billion, Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala has said.
In 2015, Sri Lanka received USD 6,980.3 million in foreign remittances equivalent to Rs. 949 billion. Compared to 2015, the increase in remittances amounts to USD 261.3 million equivalent to Rs.105.5 billion at current rate. The remittances has increased by 3.7 percent in in US dollars while in rupees the increase is 11.11 percent.
Minister Athukorala thanked the migrant workers who worked hard and as their remittances strengthen the country's economy and assured that she will work towards their welfare and take all steps to protect their families.
