* British Minister Alok Sharma cancels visit to Sri Lanka due to calling for snap election

Apr 19, Colombo: British Minister for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alok Sharma has cancelled his scheduled visit to Sri Lanka this week.

The British High Commission in Colombo said Minister Sharma cancelled the visit due to British Prime Minister Theresa May calling for a General Election to be held in the UK on 8th June.

Minister Sharma was scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from April 20th to 22nd, 2017. Apart from holding meetings with the government officials, Sharma was scheduled to speak at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute on the 21st of April on "Challenges in post Brexit World".

The event at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute at 5:00 pm on Friday therefore has been cancelled, the High Commission informed.
