* Colombo Municipal Council finds five sites to dispose city's garbage
Tue, Apr 18, 2017, 11:03 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 18, Colombo: The Commissioner of Colombo Municipal Council V.K. Anura said the garbage collected in Sri Lanka's capital city of Colombo will be disposed at five different places including Karadiyana and Dompe in western Province.

The Kesbewa Magistrate today granted permission to Colombo Municipal Council to dispose 350 metric tons of garbage collected daily from the city of Colombo to Karadiyana site.

He ordered the director of the waste management authority to allow the CMC to dispose garbage to the site until the 28th of this month.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people today protested against the attempt to dispose garbage to the Kirindiwela- Maligawatte integrated waste management center.

Gampaha senior SP Muditha Prasanna has explained the current situation to the people in the area.

Manager of the Integrated Waste Management center in Kirindiwela Chathuru Malwana noted that although the people have protested against the garbage disposal there was no problem in disposing the Colombo city solid waste to the center as it is not receiving adequate garbage for recycling purposes.

Malwana said the capacity of the garbage disposal is in the region of 90 tons per week. Pradeshiya Sabha is only disposing 2-3 tons of garbage and even 10 percent of the area cannot be filled with the garbage being received by the center. He said a decision has been made to send 75 tons of Colombo's solid waste.
