Thu, Apr 13, 2017, 09:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 13, Colombo: A businessman, who said to have been abducted in Ipalogama, Kekirawa by a group in a white van pretending to be police, has been arrested for faking his abduction to mislead police and authorities.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody has said that the 38-year-old man is in fact a leader of a criminal gang wanted by the police for several robberies.

The wife of the businessman, Ajantha Biyagama, lodged a complaint in Kekirawa police that an armed group arrived in a white van around 7 in Sunday (09) morning to the house and took away her husband.

She told the police that the group was said to be from Bandarawela police, and was talking with her husband for nearly a half an hour before taking away the man.

Police Media Spokesman said the man is in fact a key leader of a criminal gang and he faked his abduction to raise fears in public and mislead the authorities.

The Spokesman said that two Police teams launched investigations into his wife's complaint under the direction of the SSP in charge of Anuradhapura division, on the orders of IGP Pujith Jayasundara.

While it was uncovered during investigations that the individual had not been abducted, the arrested suspect is believed to be the leader of criminal gang responsible for several major robberies carried out in Anuradhapura area since 2014.

According to the Police Media Spokesman, the investigations have uncovered that the individual was involved in the theft of 11.5 kg of gold, worth around 70 million rupees, from a safe at a financial institution in Anuradhapura on November 26th last year.

A resident of Vaddukoddai in Jaffna, considered to be an expert in breaking into safes, has also been arrested over his ties to this gang.

The "abductee" has reportedly served as a private bodyguard for several politicians in the Anuradhapura district. There were three cases pending against him at the Kekirawa Magistrate Court, police said.
