July 08, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today granted bail to former UPFA Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) last month.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya released Vass Gunawardena on a cash bail of Rs 500,000 and 4 personal bails of Rs 500,000 each, when he was produced in the court today.

The CID arrested Vass Gunawardena on June 27 in connection with an alleged fraud involving a property in Colombo. He was accused of extorting money from a businessman to the tune of Rs. 610 million.

The former legislator was arrested by the police CID in May last year over allegations of misusing vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat. The Colombo High Court granted him bail in September last year.

The MP, who was also a coordinating secretary of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been charged of misusing 23 vehicles attached to the Presidential Secretariat.
