Oct 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka police anti-riot squad used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a group of students of Higher Diploma in Accountancy this afternoon who were on a protest march in capital Colombo.
Hundreds of students who were on a protest march to the University Grant Commission (UGC) in Ward Place clashed with the police near the Temple Trees.
The clash injured eight people including four female students, and a police constable. The injured have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
The police arrested 39 students and five female students and two monks were among the arrested, police officials said.
The arrested students will be produced before the courts tomorrow (30), the police said. They are currently detained at the Bambalapitiya police station.
The students were demanding the government to address several issues they face within the university system.
Police Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said the police used the minimum force as the students disrupted the peace and obstructed the police personnel from maintaining the law and order. He said an investigation has been launched into the incident.
