July 31, Colombo: The construction work of the Colombo-Kandy expressway will start on Monday under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The Chairman of the Road Development Authority Saman Bandara said that the construction work of the first segment of Kadawatha to Mirigama will start on Monday.
The 2nd stage of the expressway will be constructed from Mirigama to Kurunegala and under the third stage it will be constructed from Kurunegala to Kandy. Constructions will also be carried out from Kurunegala to Dambulla as well.
The idea was originally proposed by the United National Party (UNP) government in 2002. A Malaysian company has had discussions with the then UNP government over building the Expressway from Colombo to Kandy. However the project did not get started due to the elections and the fall of the UNP government.
The previous government under President Mahinda Rajapaksa launched the project to construct the Colombo-Kandy Expressway as part of Northern Expressway construction in November with loan assistance from China.
