* Work on Matara-Hambantota segment of Sri Lanka's Southern Expressway to begin today

July 04, Colombo: The construction work on the extension of the Southern Expressway from Matara to Hambantota will be inaugurated by President Maithripala Sirisena today.

The expenditure for the construction of the 75-kilometer segment from Matara- Godagama to Hambantota Harbor via Beliatta, Andarawewa, and Mattala Matara-Hambantota segment of Sri Lanka's Southern Expressway is estimated at Rs. 45 billion.

According to the Minister of Highways, Kabir Hashim, the government has entered into a fresh agreement on the Matara-Hambantota Expressway project and the fresh agreement into the project is estimated to see a reduction in the cost by about 20 percent from the original amount.

The completed Southern Expressway will be connected to Colombo-Kandy Expressway and Colombo-Katunayake Airport Expressway via the Colombo Outer Circular Highway which is expected to reduce the traffic congestion in the Colombo city and provide faster access to outskirts.

Meanwhile, a part of Kaduwela to Kadawatha of the outer Colombo Highway will be vested with the public by the President on Thursday.
