* Sri Lanka to educate tourists on biodiversity

Dec 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka has drawn up a plan to educate the tourist to the island on biodiversity in the county's national parks.

The plan has been drawn-up jointly by the Ministry of Environment and the Wildlife Conservation Department, reports the state-run ITN TV.

A program to educate tourists about the biodiversity in national wildlife parks was held in the Bundala National Wildlife Park recently. Officers of the Udawalawa, Lunugamvehera, Bundala and other National Wildlife Parks took part in the program.

The island is one of 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world with 501 protected areas including strict nature reserves, national parks, forest corridors and sanctuaries amounting to over 1.7 million hectares of protected land.

Director of Biodiversity of the Department of Wildlife Conservation R.H.M.P. Abeykoon said that the aim of the program is to attract more tourists by educating them on rich biodiversity in the National Wildlife Parks.
