Sept 21, Galle: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Sunday declared open a modern shopping complex established by transforming an old Dutch building within the historic fort in the southern city of Galle.

The historic Old Dutch Hospital building within the Galle Fort has been renovated as an exclusive modern shopping complex while preserving its old Dutch architecture.

The shopping complex will include gems and jewellery shops, tea and spice shops, antiques collectibles shops, a traditional Ayurveda spa and foods and beverage shops. The complex has 8 trade stalls in the 1st floor and 10 stalls in the 2nd floor.

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) undertook the demanding task of restoring and developing the Galle Dutch Hospital, preserving its original architectural aspect.

According to UDA, the exterior has been changed to make it a unique and sophisticated building within the locality and to blend the internal ambiance with modern facilities which have been developed while maintaining its original architectural designs.
