* Sri Lanka's veteran trade union leader Bala Tampoe passes away

Sept 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's veteran trade union leader Bala Tampoe passed away this afternoon at a private hospital in Colombo. He was 92 years old.

Tampoe was the longtime leader of the Ceylon Mercantile Union of Sri Lanka. An advocate of criminal law, Tampoe became the General Secretary of the CMU in February 1948.

He was a member of Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP).

The funeral of Bala Tampoe will take place on Friday 06th of September at Borella cemetery.
