Sept 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Customs has arrested a Chinese national at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning while attempting to smuggle Wallapatta.

The 43-year-old Chinese man was arrested with 13 kilograms of Wallapatta worth over Rs 10 million in his possession.

The suspect was arrested when he was about to board a flight to Shanghai via Kuala Lumpur.

A Customs Spokesperson said the Bio Diversity, Cultural and National Heritage Protection Unit of the Customs in collaboration with the Airport Customs Staff is conducting further investigations.

Smuggling Walla Patta (Gyrinops Walla), a plant native to Sri Lanka, has become more frequent recently.
