* Factions of Sri Lanka doctors' union at national hospital clash
Wed, Jul 30, 2014, 09:38 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 30, Colombo: A tense situation erupted at the Colombo National Hospital of Sri Lanka due to a clash between two groups of doctors.

The clashed groups belonged to two factions of the powerful doctors' union, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA).

The clash erupted as one group started distributing a leaflet against the alleged actions of the other group to disrupt the union.

A meeting that was to be held under the patronage of one faction was also disrupted due to the tense situation.

Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that security was intensified in the hospital premises and additional police officers have been deployed to the scene.

GMOA is currently undergoing an internal power crisis and one group has obtained an injunction against the executive committee of the union. The Executive Committee of the GMOA has been suspended under a judiciary ruling and the Central Committee is the apex body of the GMOA now.
